Clarke Willmott joins £50k fundraising effort for World Encephalitis Day

National law firm Clarke Willmott LLP is once again supporting this year’s World Encephalitis Day (WED) on Saturday, 22nd February, to help raise global awareness of the potentially devastating brain condition.

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain caused by an infection or a problem with the immune system. There are multiple potential triggers and the level of long-term damage caused by the illness may vary from individual to individual.

Long-term outcomes can include tiredness, recurring headaches and difficulties with memory, concentration, mood swings, aggression and clumsiness through to epilepsy, bodily weakness, loss of sensation and significant long-term brain injury.

Clarke Willmott is a corporate supporter and an innovation partner of the Encephalitis Society, which helps raise public awareness, support those affected, and fund scientific research. The firm’s medical negligence team is a specialist in this area and supports patients and their families where it can be shown that medical treatment has been unacceptable.

Last year, Clarke Willmott had the opportunity to sit down with Joanne Martin, a former client, to share the story of her daughter Allana, who tragically lost her life due to a poor treatment for her encephalitis. Joanne and her family hope that by sharing Allana’s story, it can increase understanding and awareness of the disease, particularly the cognitive changes that may occur.

World Encephalitis Day 2025

This year’s WED will focus on the Encephalitis Society’s work with the World Health Organisation.

Five years ago the society presented a petition signed by more than 27,000 people to the WHO to show that #EncephalitisMatters and this year will see the publication of a WHO technical briefing in the run-up to 22nd February.

The document is aimed at policymakers, government and health officials globally, asking them to recognise the problem of encephalitis and be open to solutions on topics such as better surveillance, improved diagnostics and treatments and furthering research.

The Encephalitis Society is aiming to raise £50,000 by the end of WED 2025 towards these activities, driven by the technical briefing.

This week ahead of WED on Saturday the team is running fundraising events in our offices as well as sharing their knowledge in colleagues to support awareness of encephalitis and its impact.
