West Midlands: A hotspot for uninsured drivers

A serious injury specialist has voiced his concern at new data showing that Birmingham and the West Midlands are among the worst places in the UK for uninsured drivers.

The findings by industry body, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB), show locations in the West Midlands account for eight of the top 15 hotspots for uninsured driving in the UK.

Serious injury solicitor Philip Edwards says being involved in an accident with an uninsured driver can have devastating consequences.

“I represent those who have suffered life-changing injuries or have lost loved ones as a result of road traffic accidents involving drivers without insurance.

“I’m shocked and disappointed the area where I live and work is among the worst for uninsured drivers.

“Insurance is designed to protect us all from the mistakes of others and to ensure the victims of those mistakes are properly compensated – choosing to drive without insurance is a reprehensibly selfish act.”

For some, according to the MIB report, the impact is catastrophic with accidents involving uninsured or hit and run drivers occurring on average once every 20 minutes nationally and at least one person each day sustaining injuries so severe that they require lifelong care.

Added Philip: “The findings highlight a worrying trend, that not only puts innocent victims at greater risk but also underscores a growing disregard for road safety and legal responsibility.

“Statistics show that those who don’t insure are much more likely to cause an accident than those who do.

“Being involved in an accident or hit and run incident with a driver without insurance can have devastating consequences, not just physically, but financially as well. This is why it is so important to take proper legal action to ensure compensation is secured and lives can be rebuilt.

“Without this, families may struggle to pay for funeral costs, medical treatment, loss of income, and emotional and financial support they need during such a traumatic time.”

Philip says that while the claims process can be complex, professional legal support is invaluable.

“If you are the victim of an uninsured or hit and run driver and sustain serious injuries, you are still likely to be able to obtain compensation if there is a policy of insurance relevant to the vehicle or from the MIB themselves.

“The process can be complicated but expert lawyers can help, and I would encourage victims to always seek legal advice.”

Philip has expertise in head injury claims and has also represented clients following traumatic amputation, spinal cord injury, multiple orthopaedic injuries and burns. For more information contact a member of the team today on 0800 316 8892 or send an enquiry.
